I’m a small business owner of Poised Fitness, a boutique fitness studio in Gunter, TX, a personal trainer, nutritionist and blogger. I’ve been personal training people for almost 20 years now. I’m FINALLY starting to put my workouts online for purchase. Maybe, you know resistance training is important for women, but you aren’t sure where to begin. In this post, Functional Strength Workouts for Women, I’m giving you all the goods.
Quick Recap, What is Functional Fitness Training?
“Functional fitness exercises train your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks by simulating common movements you might do at home, at work, or in sports” – Mayo Clinic. “Functional training got its beginnings in the physical rehabilitation field and was created by physical therapists to improve patient recovery after injury or disability.” — Aaptiv
Benefits of Functional Strength Training for Women
Resistance training, also known as strength or weight training, is crucial for women’s overall health and well-being. Despite some historical misconceptions, resistance training is highly beneficial for women and offers a wide range of advantages.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM MY WORKOUTS.
Workouts are 25-35 minutes long. There are workouts for beginners and those who have been lifting a while. If you are a beginner, I suggest starting with the Functional Foundational Strength Workout. You should be able to support your own body weight before progressing to heavier weights, which is what this workout will help you achieve.
These workouts can be taken to the gym or done at-home.
These workouts are through my online personal training portal. You’ll create an account and have access to the portal for 6 months from the date you purchase the workout. You can “mirror” on a big screen, use the app or print the workout out.
Each exercise/movement is demonstrated with a short video and text. I am a huge advocate “Form over Function” meaning I want you to master great form, before progressing in your workouts. If you need to start with bodyweight, that is just fine. You do you, boo.
I suggest sticking with these workouts for 4-6 weeks and applying progressive overload during that time, meaning adding more weight or reps. Challenge yourself, but maintain good form.
How to Create a Weekly Fitness Routine with My Functional Strength Workouts.
These workouts can be used a number of ways. It all really depends on your personal goals and your fitness levels. See my blog post here on Functional Strength Training for Women. In this post I give my fitness routine recommendations for women over 30-50 and women over 50.
An example of utilizing the workouts in a routine for a beginner that works out 4 days per week.
She purchases the functional foundational strength workout and does it twice a week (non-consecutive days). She also walks 3 miles 2 days in the week. After 4-6 weeks of this routine, she may progress and purchase Full-body Functional Strength Training Workouts, both heavy and light. She may do the heavy routine 1 day/week and the light routine another day in the week and walk 2 more days during the days.
An example of utilizing the workouts in a routine for someone that works out 5 days a week and has previous experience resistance training. She may purchase all three workouts, the foundational, the light resistance and the heavy resistance. She will do each of them 1 day during the week, with a cardio workout in between each workout.
It’s really up to you and your goals.
