If you’re unfamiliar with the many benefits of Counter I have some very interesting information for you that may make you change the way you shop for beauty product
Have you ever stopped to think about the personal care products you are putting on your body every day? Like…if they are safe or not? Yeah…I hadn’t really either until I came across some staggering statistics that rocked my world. Before coming across this information I assumed the products I used every day on my body were pretty safe. They couldn’t be that bad, right?
As a health and fitness professional, health is a priority for me and my family. We work out, eat healthy most of the time (80/20 rule) and we use mostly non-toxic household cleaning products. However, I never really stopped to think that the products we apply to our bodies could be detrimental to our health. I assumed there had to be some safety regulations in place. Boy, was I wrong.
Why Choose Clean Beauty? Check out these statistics!
- The European Union bans over 1,400 harmful cosmetic ingredients, while the United States only bans 30!
- The last time Congress passed a major law regulating the cosmetics industry was 1938! Also, the United States has introduced over 80,000 chemicals since WWII and only 10% of those chemicals have been tested for human safety.
- Even more troubling, some of these harmful ingredients allowed in our daily products have been linked to cancer, infertility, learning disabilities, and other health issues. Our skin is our largest organ and it absorbs roughly 60% of what we put on it.
- Lastly, and possibly the most disturbing is that there is a complete lack of regulation in the U.S. when it comes to the ingredients companies are allowed to use. The Food and Drug Administration does not require that cosmetic ingredients or products be approved before they go on the market, and the FDA has no power to recall a product from the market. And we are putting these harmful ingredients on ourselves and our families each and every day. The Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022 (MoCRA) is the most significant expansion of FDA’s authority to regulate cosmetics since the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act was passed in 1938. This new law is one step in the right direction to ensure the safety of cosmetic products many consumers use daily. However, we still have a very long way to go.
These statistics can be a little heavy. And maybe a little overwhelming too, right? Well…I’ve got good news! Thankfully there is a solution to the problem! A company by the name of Beautycounter is creating safer and more effective skincare and cosmetics for women and families. Not only are they creating a solution to the problem but they are advocating in Washington, D.C. for stricter laws on cosmetics and personal care products. So if this information moved you as it did me and you want to slowly start making the switch to safer personal care products, I highly suggest visiting the EWG Skindeep database.
You can plug in your current products and see their toxicity score. All Beautycounter’s products are EWG verified. Beautycounter has also gone above and beyond when creating their products and they have created a Neverlist. They will never use over 2,800 potentially harmful ingredients when creating their products.
As you begin switching over to safer, whether it be Counter or another brand keep this one thing in mind. All “safe” products are not created equal. Do not be misguided by the marketing terms “Organic” or “Natural.” Unfortunately, in the personal care industry, these labels can be very deceiving. Due to the lack of regulation in the U.S., companies can get away with labeling their products however they see fit. This is where the EWG skin-deep database can be a very helpful tool when looking into the safety of a product.
You also might find while searching for safer personal care products that safety and performance are rarely combined. You may find a safe product but it might leave you longing for your old toxic products due to the performance. If you find a high-performing product it is most likely loaded with ingredients that are harmful to your health. When you shop with Counter you are getting both safety and performance in one package.
Ok now let’s talk about some of the products Counter has created.
